In my personal life, I often get asked why I’m closer to my older brother Vlad than any of my other siblings. The answer is in a way easy, yet so difficult to say. The difficulties of depression, which any abused or closeted person knows, I strike 2 for 2 here… I’ve had the thought of taking my own life, as did my brother. However, unlike him, I never even tried but got the help of a therapist that never truly helped at all. Only after being adopted by my parents and their acceptance of who I am, I dared to be open about both parts. The knowledge of my brother understanding my pain in some ways is what brought me closer to him than the rest of my family. I really wish the world was more accepting of what they regard as different. There’s no shame in being different. There is shame in being someone who bullies or does even worse.
